Democratic Education Resources
This page provides links to a range of resources that support the development of democratic education, student voice and personalised education.
The English Secondary Students’ Association (ESSA) will be launching Campaign for Change in the new school year. This is an exciting new initiative aimed at encouraging 8000 students to have a voice and campaign on a broad range of issues which affect them in their lives at school or college. Campaign choices are entirely up to the students and can be as diverse as promoting eco-schools to raising awareness about gun crime or poverty.
In turn, ESSA will provide campaigners with:
- The Campaign for Change toolkit which includes advice on how to start and run an effective campaign
- Free OCN accredited campaigns training (for students aged 16-19)
- A lively website which enables students to start a campaign or join an existing one and access to a national network of student-campaigners, peer support, and links to numerous additional resources.
If you are a young campaigner, youth worker or a teacher and would like more information, please call 0207 022 1910 and ask for the project manager, Carol Barnes or email Carol.Barnes@studentvoice.co.uk
Learner Voice - A NEW free publication for educators and learners
By Tim Rudd, Futurelab; Fiona Colligan, Educational Consultant; Rajay Naik, English Secondary Students Association (ESSA).
Futurelab has recently launched a new publication which could help educators and learners to achieve personalised learning - and it is free to download from their website.
Despite the vast number of changes in the education system in recent years, learners are seldom consulted and remain largely unheard in the change process. If education is to become more personalised, then the views of learners must be heard. This handbook draws on examples, case studies and research to provide learners and educators with information and ideas for promoting the voices of learners.
