Eudec 2013 conference

By Chloe Duff

Thanks to The Phoenix Education Trust I was fortunate enough to attend the EUDEC Conference 2013 in Soest, The Netherlands. The event was a gathering of people involved and interested in democratic education from Europe and beyond. The conference consisted of open space workshops and talks where participants had the opportunity to explore and discuss ideas and share information and knowledge. As well as the amazing array of open space workshops put on by participants there were some excellent keynote speakers coming from as far as the Turkey, Israel and the USA. You can find more information on the speakers and their talks here - http://www.eudec.org/eudec2013-programme

One of the highlights of the conference for me was attending the workshop hosted by Rachel Roberts of the Phoenix Education Trust. Coming from the UK it was really exciting and inspiring to find out about all the work Phoenix is doing in the UK. There is so much more going on in the world of democratic education in the UK than I had realised and it is so great to have Rachel and Phoenix supporting all of that activity, bringing it all together and linking up people and projects.

I also had the opportunity to be a part of the EUDEC Council handover. I stepped down from my role on Council this summer and it was great to get to know the new Council but more importantly to see a group of people coming together, full of enthusiasm and ideas who are already doing such an great job.

To sum it up the organisers did a fantastic job of creating a very relaxed atmosphere giving everyone who attended the chance to participate and get what they needed from the conference, leaving people feeling excited and inspired with new ideas for the future. So a big thank you to the organisers and to Phoenix for giving me the opportunity to be a part of this amazing event.
